Because you spend so much time in your living spaces, physical and visual comfort is important. You don’t have to compromise on style and décor in favor of comfort, however. In fact, you can fill your living room with furniture that is as functional as it is beautiful. Similarly, you can choose accent pieces and floor coverings that also boast comfort and usability.
A sectional. The cousin to the sofa is the sectional, as seen in this small-scale room. Sectionals usually take up more space, but when placed carefully, they can be very cozy. Notice how the rich color of this sectional anchors the otherwise ethereal scheme. One modern metal chair placed in the opposite corner is an extra seat for when company drops by. Essentially made up of two sofas placed perpendicular to each other, so that other upholstered furniture isn’t needed. As with sofas, sectionals come in various sizes. Two 84-in. (213-cm) sectional pieces together need a space that is 7 feet (213 cm) wide and 10 feet (305 cm) long, which is usually a significant portion of a room.
Check the joints and frame. The best sofas have joints that are double doweled and fitted with corner blocks that are both glued and screwed (not stapled) into place. Quality pieces have legs that are part of the frame, not just attached to it (although removable feet do make it easier to get items through doorways).
